This breathtakingly spacious Bijar presents a dynamic contrast between chiseled, extremely precise patterns delightfully combined with a free-spirited drawing style that revels in the beauty of spontaneous asymmetries. The dark Egyptian blue medallion is an impressive shape; the right and left sides look like the outlines of fantasy castles. It contains an asymmetrical, highly charged version of the ancient Herati pattern. Pendants of a vast scale are attached by a bright ivory “double axe” motif. Unusually exotic faceted flower forms hover attentively nearby. The masterful use of abrash throughout the composition adds tremendously to the chromatic textures. It reflects the magic of ever-changing angles of sunlight moving across the surface, a beauty most often regarded as inconsequential in our modern, over-entertained lifestyles. These botanical elements become containers for a magnificent palette of colors, including peacock blue, copper, woody brown, gold, and pistachio green. Each hue is set alight with an inherent luminosity that comes from natural mountain sheep’s wool that was used for millennia until the early 20th century. Its serene marine blue main border is a wonderfully eccentric version of a classic court design that adds a beautiful counterpoint to the more structured center.
