("Great Lakes Collection")This precious piece of Caucasian tribal history is a masterful, ebullient example of endlessly fascinating folk art and is a visual feast of rich color tones and age-old symbolism. At first glance, when this rug arrived at the gallery, we thought it was simply a rare ivory ground Shirvan with a captivating traditional allover pattern style that certain collectors gravitate to. Upon further study, we realized this magical object reads more like a fascinating ancient codex from a lost language. Forty-two spectacular geometric emblems parade across the field in organized splendor, with each row featuring a different configuration through the dextrous hand of a virtuoso tribal weaver. Beyond this stunningly diverse array of quasi-medallions is a vast spectrum of well-spaced Caucasian apotropaic ornaments rendered in exceptional clarity. Eight-pointed "Stars of Wisdom," checkerboard diamonds, tiny cloudbands, and triangular tasseled talismans share the stage with "Endless Knot" rosettes, "Trees of Life," and curious canine companions. The individualistic ashik symbols provide an animated frame and dynamic counterpoint in this superb condition Shirvan. GLC rugs cannot be purchased using exchange credit.
