CHI CHI
3' 10" x 5' 11" (117 x 180cm) 3rd Qtr., 19th C.
(High-Collectible) ("New Arrivals Gallery") Oftentimes, it is fun to imagine the fantastic, and sometimes likely arduous, voyages that these artworks have made since their inception. This jovial rug hails from the highlands just north of Daghestan, the Caucasian sub-style known as Chi Chi is simultaneously diverse and very distinctive. Flowerheads casually arranged in rows have become delightful geometric abstractions that are curiously animated, appearing to drift diagonally through the central space. Its rare suite of colors is buoyant with hues both warm and cool, heightening the presence of this handsome and sophisticated piece. The orderly border suite is based on three harmonious tones. An original pattern in the primary band, almost unheard of for Chi Chi rugs, known to use the same border pattern almost exclusively, is a wonderfully dramatic departure. Its infectious charm and visual pizazz could also liven up an empty wall space as much as or more than any expressive painting. Fantastic quality wool has ensured that this piece remains in extremely good condition with medium pile enhanced by a slight patina.
