SHIRVAN BIRD RUG
4' 3" x 5' 0" (130 x 152cm) 3rd Qtr., 19th C.
(Connoisseur-Caliber) ("New Arrivals Gallery") With significant artistic magnitude, this memorable piece emerges from a small group of Kuba "Bird Rugs" that dextrously transformed the large, age-old 'Harshang' palmette design into a tribally inspired, abstracted winged bird motif. These figural forms are accompanied by a legion of charming, diminutive tribal ornaments, as well as pairs of energetic traditional split palmettes. Chrysanthemum rosettes, tiny S-shaped cloudbands, cruciforms, tasseled talismans, and budding sprigs seem to populate every zone, creating a sense of depth and dimensionality receding into the ivory background. A crisply etched Kufic main border further speaks to its early provenance and the great artistic sensitivity of its weaver. At some 150 years old, this bespoke Shirvan rug possesses a consummate level of fluency and whimsical creativity that further reveals itself the longer it is viewed.
