("One of “60 Best-of-Their-Type Rugs Sold in 2023") Kermanshah weavings are closely related to the fine antique carpets produced in the city of Kirman in southwest Persia. As production demands increased during the 19th century, satellite workshops were set up in the town of Kermanshah in Western Persia. This piece is an extraordinarily refined, 2nd quarter, 19th century Kermanshah, whose potent, crystal-clear cruciform medallion rests on a cream field that presents a menagerie of uniquely rendered birds and four horned steers both at the top and bottom of the field. The lobed centerpiece is based in masterfully abrashed crimson and salmon tones and adorned with highly distinctive sapphire vinery which encloses the striking quatrefoil centerpiece. Four elegant cypress trees are partially eclipsed by the border frame while four pomegranate trees sprout their robust fruit. The one-in-the-world border presents an extended series of cypress trees (a symbol of eternal life) alternating with soldiers in formal regalia. This depiction and the rug’s extraordinary craftsmanship indicate it was woven for presentation to an elite likely with martial associations.
