The finest 19th-century Southwest Persian tribal rugs have become even more highly prized as their numbers that remain in fine condition have sharply diminished. This wonderfully flamboyant rug is among the most charming and ingenious Qashqai creations we have had the privilege to handle. A visual feasting greets the eye with an avian-filled labyrinth of curious, long-necked birds in a sparkling array of colors. These curious creatures seem to be inspecting everything, perhaps looking for tasty morsels that appear to be sprinkled at their feet, under knotted carnations, atop ledges, and behind each other’s backs. Improvised tessellated areas add a tremendous source of visual interest and additional places for these wonderful “murghi” to congregate and explore. There is so much delightful spontaneity in the asymmetric ornamentation of this piece it would take innumerable hours to fully investigate the similarities and differences from one side to another. Vivid dye-work animates this spectacular pattern from this dedicated artist-weaver. The fact that this singular rug is in outstanding heavy pile condition is a welcome dividend.
