("One of “60 Best-of-Their-Type Rugs Sold in 2023") Designed for a regional aristocratic clientele, the Ferahan region of West Central Persia developed a distinctive rug-weaving tradition in the 19th century that blended geometric influences from the surrounding tribes and villages with more refined, curvilinear designs, often in an incredibly artistic manner. Here, the classic central medallion design is imbued with skillfully created natural dyes in tones of sapphire, ruby red, soft melon, and a luminous alabaster field. These tones are further enhanced by the masterful use of abrash which provides visual depth and a subtle shimmering effect. The lobed centerpiece, based in sapphire and cornflower blue, encloses an inner melon-toned medallion with a khaki eight-pointed broad flowerhead at its center. The alabaster field is spaciously rendered with delicate vinery and detailed polychrome blossoms while prodigious sapphire vines edge the perimeter of the field. The corner spandrels, featuring ruby red hues and melon tones, are filled with minuscule blossoms and finely etched vinery emanating from maize vases.
