(High-Collectible)
("New Arrivals Gallery") For the Caucasian rug collector who has them all, a thrilling, extraordinarily early masterpiece from the Kuba realm awaits the rapt viewer in this out-of-the-ordinary example of the avidly prized “Snowflake” style. Its notably harmonious composition places rhythmic, measured diagonal rows of radiant crystalline blossoms upon the tremendously effective and exceptionally rare contrast of a glowing, golden camelhair ground. The effect sets the warm jewel tones alight a wide range of enriching topaz, emerald, sapphire, and carnelian tones in a very seldom-seen juxtaposition of visionary colors. Still eschewing factory synthetic dyes at this time, saffron, madder, and indigo were used to create the spectacular formulas for dyes used on naturally shimmering karakul sheep’s wool from local flocks. Fantastic ziggurat shapes adorn the primary border with a dichromatic stripe zig-zagging along its way, representing a stream flowing toward the sea between high mountain peaks. The minor bands are superbly executed with definite Seichur overtones, as the weaver was undoubtedly familiar with their motifs, making this rug all the more beguiling and rare to see. As a one-in-the-world weaving, the collectors we acquired it from passionately preserved and cherished it for many decades.
