("New Arrivals Gallery") This enigmatic, graphically stunning Caucasian Shirvan rug offers an extremely rare and compelling format of glitzy geometric mini-medallions ascending the field, glowing against a midnight indigo background. Serrated ‘ashik’ emblems are the most represented motif, accompanied by tile-like hexadecagons and Greek omega shapes that likely represent cloudbands - harbingers of the ancient Celestial Dragon concept. Part of the genius of 19th-century Caucasian weaving is the uncanny ability to render each design as though it were moving, expanding, or contracting through almost imperceptible adjustments of size and shape. Adept use of naturally sourced color further enlivens this elemental, entirely successful weaving. Vibrant, precisely tuned shades of incandescent firebrick red, sparkling emerald greens, and rich cerulean blues are set in thrilling contrasts with saffron gold and ivory for an electrifying visual impact. The consummately executed sunburst rosette with appendages border, colloquially known as the “crab” design, is an appropriate foil to the interior, reminding us of the importance of both tradition and innovation. Happily, this exceptionally finely knotted woven jewel remains in heavier pile condition with complete ends.
