("New Arrivals Gallery") This elegant small room-size carpet harkens from the very earliest production of Sultanabad, a newly minted fort-turned-market town in north central Persia in the last three decades of the 19th century. This piece exemplifies the maturity of design and fully developed, nuanced color range that emerged from this nascent weaving region. Sultanabad's earliest room-size looms, it is realistic to surmise, were financed by neighboring Ferahan merchants who had become tremendously successful in filling the burgeoning global demand for Persian carpets in the 50 years prior. This particular rug's quality and inventive design reflect the relaxed graciousness for which Ferahan weaving is renowned and, at the same time, introduces what will become the signature Sultanabad palette. The splendiferous melon tones, aqua, peacock, and jade green are palpably harmonious as they inundate this stellar carpet's remarkably complex florid pattern. I am especially intrigued by this mind-boggling piece's beguiling use of outlining. Fan-shaped blossoms edged with ivory and floating leaves drawn in midnight indigo that render the field transparent brilliantly imbue a depth perspective to the striated soft coral ground. The asymmetrical pattern, ingeniously anchored by a vertical axis of 2-1/2 turquoise-centered wreaths, creates a timeless sense of luxuriating nature, the elaborate commingling of stylized blossoms of many different scales floating together. In themselves, exquisite are the dancing palmettes and graceful leaves that embellish the border as they perform the task of containing the melodic flower garden of the field.
