("New Arrivals Gallery") This collector-level Bakshaish rug has an inimitable spirit and presence far greater than its dimensions might suggest. This outstanding piece is an unabashed celebrity for its unique iteration of the classic vase design that is almost never employed in the Bakshaish pattern lexicon. Flanking the pedastaled vase are two alert Simurgh, the legendary birds from Persian folklore akin to the phoenix, whose presence is the harbinger of good fortune and cosmic benevolence. Lightning bolt-like branches leap from the central container to yield a wide array of blossom types. Alternating dexterously between brilliant flashes of light and dark color, the weaver has created an exceptionally diverse colorway using a restrained earthy palette. The border is drawn with a refreshingly carefree character, although based on a courtly design from the reign of Shah Abbas. The Bakshaish villages wove very few area rugs compared to the number of room sizes carpets, attributing a special value to expressive pieces still in exceedingly good condition such as this. It has a lovely 19th-century patina, yet its pile is heavy with virtually no wear.
