Folkloric whimsy and joyful exuberance unite to make this innovative semi-nomadic rug comes to life. "Northwest" refers to a diverse group of antique Persian rugs in myriad weaving villages and encampments that, during the 19th century, occupied an expansive wilderness area west of Tehran, north of Bijar, and south of Tabriz. The famed cypress "Tree of Life" design is emblazoned upon the center of a firebrick red field ornamented with florets, tiny seeds called boteh, and cherubic birds. Similarly noteworthy is the juxtaposition of the festive extravaganza compared to the strength of the conifer at its center. This tableau features hovering iris clusters, three mated bird pairs, eccentric goggle-like figures, and, yes, the two reverent dromedary camels were rendered using camelhair to achieve their golden mocha hue. Improvised cubist flower borders are additional charming features of this unaffected work of folk art. While enticing when viewed on the floor, this magical piece would look all the more spectacular as a cherished work of art on the wall.
