(High-Collectible) ("One of “60 Best-of-Their-Type Rugs Sold in 2023") The eastern Caucasus district and town of Shirvan is a well- known area producing finely knotted and highly sophisticated tribal weavings for centuries. What is most striking and memorable about most antique Caucasian rugs is their daring use of natural dyes and powerful totemic motifs. Since most smaller area size rugs were woven by a single weaver, their own personal artistic sensibilities can manifest in a profound manner. Here, the bold use of color and over-scale design elements directly strike the viewer. However, the spaciousness of the drawing, the gentle upward-downward movement of the motifs, and masterful use of quieting secondary color provide the viewer with a welcome moment of serenity. The three ascending trefoil motifs in subtly abrashed turquoise rest upon a ground of pure madder red. These primary designs are accompanied by angular flowerheads in golden ochre, sandstone medallions with small blossoms pointing downward, and a singular walnut-toned curling vine in the lower portion of the field. The deep indigo main border displays a finely etched Kufic border pattern.
