(Connoisseur-Caliber)
This tremendously unusual and inventive Caucasian camelhair rug expresses the sophisticatedly naive weavings adored by a legion of collectors and was woven in one of the many villages in the vicinity of Gendje, a market town located on the main road connecting Baku on the Caspian Sea and ancient Tiflis, now Tbilisi the capital of modern-day Georgia. Within its mellow caramel-toned camelhair field, a graceful display of “crab” rosettes and attached buds (almost exclusively found in border patterns) share real estate with smaller-scale blossoms and spontaneously placed esoteric ornaments. The adroit fluctuations of size, shape, and differing color shading of the outlines breathe life into this flashy floral display. A glowing palette of ember red, bright azure, saffron yellow, and jade greens in varying gradations of hue is juxtaposed in suave, artful ways for maximum visual impact. Superb condition adds another layer to the excitement of this unique piece when viewed in person.
