NORTHWEST
8' 10" x 10' 7" (269 x 323cm) Late 19th C.
(Connoisseur-Caliber) ("New Arrivals Gallery") Woven in the mountainous region of Northwest Persia, renowned for its imaginative, elemental rugs, this handsome carpet creates a deeply compelling aesthetic. Its expressively whimsical field pattern is evidence of the unfettered creativity that was encouraged and nourished in the villages of the region. Vertical columns, separated by narrow bands of stacked arrows, contain an intricately articulated network of motifs in the ultimate abstraction of what is essentially a botanical theme. On the right-hand side near the border, a series of miniature talismanic ornaments floats above human figures, including two riding horses enjoying the mesmerizing display. Every design is set aglow against the indigo background by a suite of organically derived colors in a subtly shifting array of hues. The main border features a sequence of flower heads and split palmettes on a burnt carnelian base. This exuberant carpet remains in mostly heavier pile condition overall.
