As one of the most recognizable and collectible Caucasian lowland rugs, Gubpa Shirvans such as this magnificent find are renowned for their archetypal artistry and delightful graphic intensity. A pair of faceted medallions and serrated crimson palmettes with mobile-like motifs and appendages are the backbone of a stunning composition. It is fascinating to imagine how this particular totemic design came to be codified, and though we may never know, one thing is for sure: once it was arrived at, it became iconic. This spacious presentation allows only for a few snowflake blossoms, knotted rosettes, and geometric emblems on a seldom-seen royal azure ground. Every motif is immensely heightened by an impressive range of virtuoso, vegetally dyed colors. Its rich golden saffron central band, with an archaic “umbrella” pattern, further distinguishes this connoisseur tribal rug’s aesthetic impact. Despite its great age, this excellent example remains in very good condition with an even, light patina overall.
