FERAHAN SUNBURST
4' 4" x 6' 6" (132 x 198cm) 2nd Qtr., 19th C.
(High-Collectible) ("The California Collection") An astonishingly well-preserved, venerable representative of the beloved “Sunburst” pattern, this small carpet achieves a level of ancient whimsy and surprise that is remarkable. It captures a potent, magical ambiance initiated by the central serrated orb holding a cluster of kaleidoscopic flowers. Instead of more typically fashioned pendants, two human faces with cloudband motifs emerge from their mouths, encircled by radiate crowns. Four cinnabar-hued exotic plants emerge from the top and bottom of the parchment-toned field, seemingly tossing tiny flowers and shrubs into the air in a celebratory gesture to the cycle of life. Continual slight variations of individual elements create unique nuances and gentle movement, beckoning the viewer’s eye to continuously explore the pattern for new happy surprises. The tightly rendered pattern in the border, almost resembling advanced circuitry, has an intriguingly modern look. During this era of creative rug making, exploratory artistry was the order of the day. This rare survival from a bygone age remains in even, medium pile condition.
