BAKSHAISH CAMELHAIR TREE OF LIFE
8' 6" x 11' 0" (259 x 335cm) Circa 1850
(High-Collectible-Plus) This 175-year-old Northwest Persian village carpet is an extraordinary artwork for the floor, with its magical miniature forest of delight. Bakshaish weavers and their primary artistic impulse of ceaseless spontaneity offer a lifetime of exploration in this arboreal wonderland of stunning variety that creates a charming canopy of constantly and subtly re-invented motifs. Three slender trees ascend the ivory field, branching and blooming along the way. Delightful brazier-like shrubs of varying heights appear to juggle an array of kite-form florets, sparkling diamonds, and roundels overseen by ultra-stylized weeping willows. Overall, the general composition has the atmosphere of a festival or otherwise animated celebration of the natural world. A relatively narrow suite of border bands includes dancing carnations and a sequence of large rosettes with “lightning bolt” leaves aptly guard this enthralling imaginary world. The unadorned camel outer margin reminds us of its renowned village origins.
