("New Arrivals Gallery") Graphic artistry defines this antique Caucasian Shirvan, bringing a vigorous intensity to this 19th-century tribal rug’s ancient motifs. Distinctively stylized flowerhead forms delight the eye with their festive patterning and crisp outlining within unusually shaped compartments created by luminous ivory lattice. The rich crimson field is part of a spectacular palette of well-saturated natural colors that, combined with the almost “cubist” drawing style, give this unique tribal weaving a real presence with a magnetic, highly individualized personality. The exquisite green hues, the most challenging color to brew and highly prized, are particularly beautiful and wide-ranging in a spectrum from jadeite to teal. A playful ivory border features a wonderfully naive rendition of the ‘leaf and chalice motif, while the outer minor band is a novel approach to a pattern that appears to have been borrowed from Chi Chi rugs. Overall, this versatile-sized rug is a wonderfully unique example that has retained even, medium pile after nearly a century and a half of age.
