KUBA PRAYER RUG
3' 1" x 5' 7" (94 x 170cm) Dated 1872
(High-Collectible) ("The California Collection") Caucasian Kuba Prayer Rugs are extremely seldom found, and this piece is set apart by its unusual size, enigmatic pattern language, and rarely seen mellow colors. Its creator presents a totemic fantasy field of abstracted cruciform medallions like we have never seen, surrounded by Wheels of Life and minuscule glyphs here and there. The pattern is exceptionally atypical for this lowland region’s prayer rugs that more often employ latticework with much simpler floral motifs. A prominent mihrab is inscribed with a date on its apex and is accompanied by two elemental Trees of Life with hieroglyphic birds at their base. Overall, this piece has a palpable energy and sublimely archaic presence. Its wide range of luminous colors attests to the comprehensive mastery of ancient dye practices maintained by tremendously skilled 19th-century tribal mountain dyers using only organic ingredients. An interlocking “bird" main border comprises polygons that resemble perching birds in profile. If you are not convinced, this weaver has also placed more obvious tiny avian forms on the vertical segments. Its condition is fabulous with mostly heavier pile.
