HADJI JALLILI TABRIZ
4' 2" x 6' 0" (127 x 183cm) Circa 1850
(High-Collectible-Plus) ("The California Collection") An eloquently artful carpet from the most august city weaving studios of the 19th century—that of the master rug designer, Hadji Jallili—duly enchants viewers. Exemplifying the elite rugs from this acclaimed courtly style, this garden portrays a wondrous profusion of painstakingly articulated flowers, branches, and leaves proceeding from and surrounding a central pedestal vase. Appearing on either side in the distance, truncated columns sprout broad-leaved plants to give the impression of an ancient classical Mediterranean landscape beneath a gracefully scalloped arch overhead. The profound idea of capturing the illusion of ephemeral rays of sunlight crossing the lanolin-glistened surface at differing times of day fascinated mature weavers and was accomplished through the hand-knotting process. This potential for dynamic ‘abrash’ tonal shifing effects was made possible at the dyeing stage by masters of yielding fine gradients of hue. A gentle patina endows this piece with an ethereal sheen that tremendously enhances its already substantial visual impact.
