DORASHT CYPRESS TREE RUG
3' 7" x 5' 1" (109 x 155cm) Circa 1850
(High-Collectible) ("The California Collection") This captivating, more than 150-year-old Dorasht rug offers an extraordinarily striking rendition of an ancient vase and cypress theme, standing amidst roses, irises, and sunflowers in a beautiful array of glowing earthy hues. Eloquently postured peacocks size up the monumental towering tree that ascends toward the scrolling archway where another pair of the mythical Persian version of the phoenix called a ‘Simurgh,’ prepare to take flight. Inside the near-perfect teardrop form are pairs of boteh ’Seeds of Life’ of various scales. Additionally, in the rosy parchment reserve, robust vinery supports a wide array of blooms and fan palmettes. The border suite is something we have not encountered. Still, the primary band appears to be a wonderfully eccentric reinvention of the famous Shah Abbas design, proving again the nearly infinite iterations that creative rug designers could achieve using well-defined graphic traditions. A slight patina, something that positively sets antique rugs apart from the rest, accentuates the unbelievable detail of every motif and imbues the piece with a glorious shimmer. It would be a most spectacular wall hanging!
