Late 19th Century
(Connoisseur-Caliber) ("New Arrivals Gallery") Kurdish rugs from this period are well-loved for their ability to embody the most vigorous, unaffected aesthetic energy of tribal weavers, while doing so with an inspired handling of natural color and a whimsical panoply of geometricized flora. Trippy flowerheads emerge from stalks on a large-scale, serrated latticework. Relatively tiny florets float in the mocha-hued field surrounding the main design, along with diamonds and globus cruciger forms. People are also depicted in this rug, perhaps representing the friends and neighbors of the weaver themselves, or simply serving as a reminder that human beings are also a part of the natural universe. Fluctuations in line and shape imbue the design elements with a soft sense of movement. Sensuous, masterfully juxtaposed, naturally dyed colors of russet, saffron gold, cerulean, terra cotta, and hints of undyed ivory sheep’s wool. This heart-warming, animated piece is in wonderful, even heavier pile condition at some 125 years of age.
