The Lattice design seen here was often woven in 18th century rugs in the three major Persian weaving areas of Ferahan, Senneh, and Khorossan. A century later the newly minted town of Sultanabad attracted weavers from the Ferahan plane to answer the growing foreign demand for Oriental carpets. This piece is an earlier product from this burgeoning weaving center, revealing a profound hidden fluidity in this pattern’s subtle, intentional variation created by a wide spectrum of colors and delicate re-sizing in the horizontal rows. On a pleasing antique ivory ground, terra cotta, leaf and celadon green, cobalt, azure and periwinkle blues, and banana yellow dance with a very generous usage of a rare lilac hue that gloriously transforms the way the colors interact in this quiet chromatic masterpiece.
