West Central Persian Antique Carpet
10' 3" x 13' 6" (312cm x 411cm) Circa 1875
This large room size is a fascinating example of the superb craftsmanship and nuanced expression of traditional patterns from the deeply inventive carpets woven on the Ferahan Plain during the 19th century. It features twelve full or partial heraldic medallions that appear to float across the continually striated aurora-hued field. Chiseled petit point motifs, including seemingly countless delicately rendered flowers, create a lace-like effect in the field. Close inspection reveals many small cruciform medallions and floral bouquets that add great texture to the composition. This abundance of rhythmical decoration is contained by borders that demonstrate a mesmerizing level of embellishment.
