("One of “60 Best-of-Their-Type Rugs Sold in 2022") The city of Tabriz, the Persian Market center most linked geographically to Europe and Western commerce, has a celebrated reputation since the 1500s for mind-boggling court-inspired elegance. This beautifully preserved tour-de-force representative of early 19th century Tabriz weaving is remarkable. The sublimity of its botanical design and surprisingly wide-ranging, shimmering color palette stands out from other extant floral examples with similar ages. Boosted by its very rare oversize dimensions, the field of concentric layers introduces in each one a different density and theme, each more entrancing than the next. The elegantly lobed, deep indigo centerpiece, with its minuscule, orderly precision and softly flowing arabesques, seems to vibrate from a deep well. Creating a sense of lightness, the airy design in the next three zones of floating botanical motifs rest in striking chromatic intensity to the medallion and borders. The delicate tones of golden sand alternating with an aged terracotta are a sublime choice by the designer and masterfully rendered dyeing that remains stable to this day. Four corner spandrels feature curling celeste blue arabesques and deep indigo quarter medallions which mirror the intricate centerpiece.
