MALAYER, Northwest Persian
3' 7" x 5' 4" Circa 1900 Price: $4,800
(High-Decorative)
Everything about this capricious antique Persian Malayer village rug indicates it was made in a milieu where commercial influences were not present. For those familiar with the “Herati” pattern, in this piece the rendition greatly expands one diamond and 4-leaves repeat from this classic allover design so that it fills the sunken central medallion which also has been enlarged to touch the borders! This striking asymmetry is only subdued by the muted secondary tones and warm neutrality of the walnut brown field. The exploration and inventiveness continues in this early 20th century rug's primitive rosette and oak leaf border, used in a very unique, deconstructed manner.
