(High-Decorative)
With its compelling drawing, this extraordinary Caucasian Kuba makes use of negative space between larger allover motifs in an especially exciting and effective way. Its figure-ground reversal is driven by highly geometricized flower heads, each of slightly and distinctly different design. In an unusually deft flourish, the rhythm, size and spacing of these motifs echo the border syncopation in the design, creating a sense of compositional cohesion that is quite attractive, alluring and uncommonly seen. Beloved of both tribal people and modern viewers, its abundant ancient symbols include all the most cherished favorites: diamonds of strength, stars of wisdom and creatively deconstructed dragons. An unusually inventive pastel palette (particularly the pale salmon and apricot) is employed by these 140-year-old Kuba weavers, who typically wove in bolder primary colors.
