SHIRVAN, Southeast Caucasian
4' 6" x 9' 8" Circa 1900 Price: $13,500
(High-Decorative)
Drawn with outstanding clarity, this turn-of-the-20th-century Caucasian Shirvan rug also boasts expert, especially potent color juxtapositions from the antique tribal carpet palette. Its use of pure, luminous ivory is masterful, profusely incorporating this hue into borders, interstitial triangles and the medallions themselves. Like the warm carnelian ground, this adept technique both contrasts and highlights the myriad secondary tones, which include pastel powder blue, vivid saffron, garnet and even celadon green. Intelligently, the axial theme is continued within each motif, to be found in expansive border blossoms as well as latchhook surrounds and the octagonal rosettes that fill every space with pulsating activity.
