This very early, one-in-the-world little rug woven in a remote nomadic encampment in Northwest Persian Azerbaijan some 180 years ago is a masterpiece of tribal weaving. Its hypnotic field design has no know precedent, and the unique border provides endless fascination. The profoundly improvisational field design begins along the lowest edge of its field with a dense iteration of the traditional Herati motif, then unpredictably becomes an entirely different, more spacious, mesmerizing presentation of large and small symbols. Here a brilliant use of three constantly shifting latch hook motifs and the outline of one and a half diamonds creates a tremendously immersive, inspired work. Lovingly cared for, it comes to us in remarkable medium pile condition.
