(High-Decorative) ("New Arrivals Gallery")This nearly 10 x 13 antique carpet from the beloved Serapi tradition in wonderful condition combines its classic medallion/corner piece formatting and expressive, Persian village-style drawing not seen in later pieces. A folkloric quality that expresses the Serapi character is on full display in this piece as no two flowers or leaves are alike, even those that are symmetrically paired on either side of the carpet. Left to right or up to down, the drawing is spontaneous and alive. This spirit is multiplied by the rug’s sunset reds and roses and its apricot, gold, and citrine highlights that are ineffably balanced by a subtle range of mid-toned blues. The spaciously presented, casual rosette border, reminiscent of the neighboring Bakshaish artistic tradition, supports this rug’s balanced aesthetic where every blossom is a new variation on the theme.
