This extraordinary “Tree of Life” rug is perhaps the most artistically adventurous Tehran we have ever seen. The drawing is natural, flowing depicting, not rabbits—a favorite in this style, but monkeys, foxes, swooping pheasants, an elephant, goats, a lion and various plumed songbirds. Near the top of the tree, a mother is alighting on a nest of fledglings. Seemingly just an ordinary day in Paradise, every creature in the field is active. This dynamism is balanced by a color palette predominately beige and mocha in the field and border, respectively, that acts to silhouette the remarkable range of naturally dyed exotic accents. The border finalizes this woven tour de force with a bird-themed patterning inventively offset in each corner by a vase of flowers “pointing” to the field. Antique area rugs were woven by one weaver who in this case threw her heart as well as her inimitable skill into her endeavor.
