Twitter Instagram Facebook Pinterest(Connoisseur-Caliber) ("New Arrivals Gallery") In the 5x9 size rarely seen in 19th century Caucasian rugs, this glorious piece marries both traditional totemic tribal elements with decidedly stylized floral patterns to create a refreshing inventive carpet. The Surahani Shirvan sub-style is associated with the sunburst motif cradling a sort of pansy pinwheel configuration, here appearing 12 times. Traditionally three of these sunbursts create a vertical axis in a much smaller carpet. In this piece the openness at the center of each sunburst, as well reflected in the border, allows the striking persimmon and lapis color pools to illumine its visage dramatically. The intriguing “climbing vinery” border design may have been inspired by earlier rugs as there does not seem to be in any other published examples, demonstrating the virtuosity of the weaver. Very finely woven for a tribal work, it also remains in outstanding heavy pile condition. Learn About This Rug Type
