This exceptional, fabulously preserved example of the Qashqai boteh design is a finely woven, hand-drawn work of art, capturing the Qashqai love of diversity within an overarching order as seen in the field display and their fascination with animals. This rug’s spandrels are filled with “mythical” peacocks, great horned elk, a hilarious long-legged bird, and other joyful elements. How do tribal weavers achieve the presentation of a repeated motif, in this case 72 times, and maintain such overall aliveness? The answer lies in the small changes within each boteh and an overall plan of hidden repetition. In a highly satisfying process, such a piece invites your eyes to trace the beguiling details and to look instinctively for the key to the order amidst the sumptuous, ever-changing placement of the colors.
