The famed "eagle Kazak (Chelaberd Karabagh) design has historical roots in the 1700’s’ in Caucasian Karabagh’s dragon rugs. In this dynamic representative in excellent condition, a larger than usual format presents the sunburst medallion in triplets, yet its precise angles and the regularity of the 12 “feathers” skillfully balances their powerful effect. Close examination will attest to a constant innovation among the smaller elements where “S” designs proliferate and myriad diminutive rosettes appearing randomly inside the medallions while outside the sprinkling of tribal motifs continues. Undulating between crimson and watermelon, the field tone is clear and resonant, combining with a radiant secondary French blue tonality. This provides a crisp contrast to these overscale undyed ivory emblems and completes this masterfully imagined oeuvre.
