ARAB KHAMSEH
4' 11" x 7' 1" (150 x 216cm) Circa 1875
(Connoisseur-Caliber) While presenting this South Persian tribal style’s signature medallion design, this nearly one-and-one-half-centuries-old rug explores the large scale drawing of their tradition that offers staggeringly detail work as well. A balanced, yet organically drawn hexagonal medallion bursting with resplendent, overscale blossoms is framed by a similarly filled opaline field and more spacious, floating cloudbands in the auburn-based corners. What seems to be a riot of color is actually a precisely measured and combined palette of earthy reds, forest greens, marigold yellows and radiant blues, illumined by a superior grade of lustrous wool. The fascinating border employs the “Eli Belinde” or “hands-on-hips" symbol derived from ancient figures of the mother goddess, perhaps energetically underlying the fecundity expressed in this carpet. This deeply emotive rug has been venerably preserved in extremely good condition.
