("Gold Coasts Collection") The Akstafa peacock, woven ten times into this top-flight piece, is revered for its celestial and royal associations. These phantasmagorical plumed fowl, displaying tail feathers that mimic a weaver's comb, appear amidst a plethora of hooked symbolic references to the dragon mythology that permeated the Caucasian imagination and, in this fabulously preserved piece, is again rekindled. Like the "Eagle Kazak's" sunburst emblem from the Caucasian Karabagh tradition, this style elicits a rapturous response. Next door to the Akstafa region, another "long rug" tradition from the Chajli area, uses strikingly oversize octagons in a columnar display. This carpet extremely skillfully and innovatively combines these two traditions to create an entirely fresh ambiance while retaining the symbolism's enigmatic quality.
