Woven in Chi Chi, a village about 20 miles southeast of Kuba, measured asymmetry is seamlessly married to cheerful color and balanced design in an atypical example from this famed subgroup of Caucasian rugs. The field design is affably larger scale and more generously spaced than in the majority of Chi Chis that we see. Often sporting more limited coloration, this rug's vivid, wide tonal range is immediately noted, indicating a much broader knowledge of dye recipes than was typical. Its alluring palette includes rich hunter green, ripe tangerine, cherry hues, and tones of paled lilac, teak, and maize. The diagnostic rosette and diagonal bar border undergoes artistically audacious compression and expansion until sections at the top are essentially atomized, belying the weaver’s irreverent humor. More finely woven than neighboring styles, a superb Chi Chi such as this unexpected piece is a welcome addition to any collection of tribal rugs.
