("Gold Coasts Collection") This one-in-the-world, well over 150-year-old carpet captures the essence of what makes the uniquely folkloric Bakshaish style an enduring favorite among antique rug cognoscenti. It is rife with coveted asymmetrical design elements and a soothingly mellow 19th-century color palette. Cast adrift on a masterfully restrained, continually abrashed reserve, based in soft vermillion, a lucent cerulean blue medallion extends into double-lobed pendants and esoteric appendages that allude to the Eastern dragon’s essence clutching two gems. In the expansive ivory spandrel frame, where you would expect to find a continuation of the Herati pattern of the medallion, are profuse waves of endearing, top-knotted wildflower sprigs in ever-changing hues. This top-tier original piece completely captures the unbridled expressiveness that so enthralls art collectors, and, along with inventive ingenuity, is in extraordinarily good condition.
