Dwelling in a hilly district just north of the border with Persia, the nomadic tribespeople of the Moghan region had a small output of delightfully folkloric rugs during the 19th century. In this enticing, whimsical piece, thirty-nine stacked Memling mandalas drift upon a scintillating denim ground of color-shifting bands. Its naively organic main border is an inventively deconstructed version of the classic 'leaf and wine glass' pattern, its omega-like cups abstractly drawn and occasionally missing their stems. The fluctuating sequence of color within the secondary borders further alludes to the peripatetic circumstances in which this rug was created, in which its weaver frequently set up and took down her portable loom, sometimes several times between a succession of fertile grounds. All in all, this very early, quintessentially tribal piece aptly demonstrates the rustic charm of a life lived on the go.
