This small antique carpet harkens from the small village of Fyndygan within the Baku orbit. The design of this superly well-preserved piece evokes an arcane enclosure protecting what the enigmatic motifs within the rectangles symbolize. It is clearly the work of an inspired and highly skilled weaver who borrowed the keyhole design from the neighboring Surahani district but kept the prominent display of shrubs with hooked ends, eight-pointed stars, and two-heading zoomorphic figures. Its three horizontal rectangles and connecting marine blue columns are encased in tiles of two patterns. The “hashtag” tile also appears in the upper and middle medallions. Accentuating the mind-boggling complexity of this rug, five borders offer a kaleidoscope of jewel-toned colors. Its wonderfully versatile smaller area size allows it to be used in a variety of placements.
