Late 19th Century

Crafted some 120 years ago in the Shirvan district near the Caspian Sea, this striking piece offers time-honored Caucasian artistry while foreshadowing modern European art. The rug's central composition creates the illusion of vertical movement with its abrupt interruption at the top of the field, suggesting to the viewer that they have only caught a snapshot of the infinite cosmic tapestry hidden behind the border. Robust slow-dyed hues sourced from plants gathered locally yield eye-pleasing alchemy of mid-tones, including royal blue, forest green, and golden wheat. As you follow the "hashtag" ivory border around the field, you will find evidence of the weaver's effervescent spontaneity. Seldom found in such narrow dimensions, this rug is destined to complete that difficult-to-furnish space.
