(Connoisseur-Caliber)
This inventive, nearly 150-year-old tribal rug was likely woven in one of the many villages in the vicinity of Gendje, a market town located on the main road connecting Baku and Tbilisi, the capital of modern-day Georgia. Its refreshing originality of its freeform design and inventive use of color create an immediately apparent, deeply enlivening spirit. Note its numerous evocative color shifts, as potent sea greens, delicate celadon, burnished gold, buoyant blues, and glowing carnelian breathe tremendous vitality into this very personal woven artwork. The unconstrained border, using the ‘Wheel of Life’ motif, symbolic of man's changing fortune, is exceptionally free-spirited--an organic trait that essentially vanished as the 20th century loomed. In extremely good condition for its age and rugged life history, it offers a lightly patinated medium pile.
