Nestled within the ranges near Mount Sabalan, the village of Serab was home to a multitude of tribally rooted weavers, who in the 19th century produced delightfully stylized rugs made predominately with camelhair, such as this sterling example. Seldom found in today's market, Serab rugs most often feature a diamond-like latticework in its reserve, resembling the Jali screens found in architecture. Here, an especially dexterous, finely tooled pattern created by undyed sheep's wool and camel hair. Asymmetrically placed "tiles" depict endearing elemental plants with chevrons for leaves and diamonds for flowerheads. Magically creating a one-of-a-kind sophisticated ambiance, skillful dye work infuses the medallion and border suite with rich organic hues that set off the naturally striated luminosity of the camelhair, gloriously on display in the mocha toned outer margin. This area-size gem remains in very fine condition.
