This majestic treasure is a consummate example reminiscent of very early Karachovs before market influences standardized its pattern language. Dating from the 1870s, its drawing is exceptionally clear, presenting the traditional grand octagonal medallion atop a square filled with a painstakingly knotted checkered pattern. A spirited variety of simplified esoteric tribal ornaments, ram’s horn motifs, and archaic latch hook appendages possibly based on shepherd’s staves fill the ivory center. The luscious bottle green field, highly prized amongst Caucasian rug aficionados, contains golden flame emblems, star-filled squares, hourglass disks, and other elemental polygons. The luminescent vermillion border highlights varied patterns where some of the “wine glass” flowers look almost figural. As you can see from the high-resolution detail images, this outlier rug is in phenomenal condition, elevating its rarity to even greater heights.
