Just when we thought we could not be surprised by the nearly endless design iterations woven in the mountain village of Bakshaish, along comes a rug with patterning that we have not experienced before. Exemplifying the Bakshaish penchant for experimentation, this one-in-the-world folk art rug is an important and exciting discovery and is alive with gentle movement. From a shimmering rust-red lotus medallion, its petals interlaced by vinery in exquisite sage green, four golden torch-like appendages support boteh seeds as blue flames that illumine delicate, tendril-connected blossoms on a parchment ground. The floating flowerheads in the coruscating sapphire blue border are spontaneously drawn. The bottom band is more compressed, proclaiming free-form artistry that tremendously enhances the impeccable composition. This venerable, exceptionally rare area-size masterpiece is remarkably preserved in heavier pile condition, demonstrating the great allure it had over its previous owners for some 15 decades. .
