This strikingly graphic 150-year-old Kazak ingeniously combines powerful and whimsical motifs to create a one-of-a-kind tribal rug. A buff-toned rectangular medallion features a unique tetrad of abstract flower forms and Stars of Wisdom on a saturated madder red field, textured by abrash. The niches at both ends of the field hold novel winged motifs with millennia-old 'ashik' emblems at their heart. Two enigmatic figures can be found beside the upper arch, while below, totemic stags and chevron trees flank the jewel-studded niche. Naturally dyed Egyptian cobalt, emerald, and bronze enhance the glowing chromatic spectrum. An impressive "trophy" border and accompanying bands of lyrically rendered cloudband patterns serve to protect the interior symbolic magic. The energetic expression and quizzical asymmetry of this connoisseur's piece are delightful. Extremely good condition redoubles its inherent allure.
