("One of “60 Best-of-Their-Type Rugs Sold in 2022") Fine 19th-century Serapi carpets include some of the rarest, most desirable, and beloved of Persian carpet styles. Woven in the rugged mountains of Northwest Persia, Serapi rugs are a distinct Heriz region style, with finer knotting and more large-scale, spaciously placed designs than other rugs from this area. The exceptional time-softened color palette and superb capacious design rendering, significantly elevate its artistic cache. The innermost square in deep indigo and coral, with “four-direction” broad palmettes emanating onto a soft maize hexagon, is enclosed by an edge of deeply serrated vinery. The weavers took special care in creating two sets of three colorful broad vertical palmettes beginning at the central motif and radiating outward toward each end of the carpet. Four rose quartz corner spandrels are adorned with partial medallions that harmonize eloquently with the soft, golden centerpiece.
