Enthrallingly stylized, this 150 to 170-year-old classical Serapi reads like the Platonic ideal of a celebrated style. Its eloquent naturally derived colors, crystal clarity, and perfect range of scale emanate an irrepressible, energetic spirit. A magnificent eight-petalled flower medallion dominates the center, rendered with tremendous precision and ultimate confidence. Anchor-style pendants are held close, their curling features representing the Far Eastern dragon’s energy while simultaneously resembling two deep blue swans in a mirrored profile. Naive blossoms, leaves, and palmettes spring forth from a network of vinery that spreads across a field imbued with a soft golden glow. This rare hue was brewed with saffron, a commodity of great expense, then even more so than now, requiring 4,000 crocus blooms to yield one ounce. Elaborate cruciforms and heraldic winged devices linger near the perimeter. These never-before-seen designs make this regal carpet a rare find indeed. Blessed with the longevity of superlative workmanship and still exhibiting wonderful pile condition, this northwest Persian treasure, with its particularly well-spaced pattern and robust hues, resonates with a glistening patina.
