Large room-sized camelhair carpets were rarely woven, so we are extremely delighted to offer this stunning Persian Serab Camelhair carpet. The stepped diamond medallion with weathervane pendants floats on an ethereal hexagonal latticework of tiny "Wheels of Life." It presents an incredibly imaginative pattern, inspired at least in part by the classic "Harshang" design. Symbolically depicted on pottery since at least the Bronze Age, the serrated ashik 'gul' or 'flower' appears on either side of the jewel-shaped centerpiece, reminding us of the ancient origins of carpet-making arts. In the steeply stepped spandrels, elemental candelabra shaped "Trees of Life," pinwheel florets, boteh "Seeds of Life," and even the weavers themselves make an appearance, seemingly drifting past our view beyond the border frame toward infinity. Lustrous colors leap out at the viewer through potently brewed hues of madder red, cornflower blue, brass, cerulean, and burnt sienna. The ivory border sequence is also highly original and lends an undulating rhythmic quality. The renowned construction quality of Serab weavings assures that this 19th-century art carpet will endure long into the future.
